Adele Schuman

Tribute to Adele
By Robert Bluman (CW Class of 1970)

Adele Schuman's parents were close friends with my parents, Stanley and Irene Bluman. Adele was my big sister-buddy as well as my babysitter when I was a little kid.

Adele lived with her parents and brother, Ted, on Everett Drive in one of the "suburban" ranches across from Princeton Park. If you remember, the late 1940s to 1950s brought mass construction to the area around Academy Place and other streets. Although their house was probably 800 sq. ft, I always thought it was the cat’s meow! Adele faced a few challenges in life and her parents worried terribly about what would happen in her later years. I remember when her mom passed away at age 52 (in the mid 1960s), Adele walked from Everett Drive to our home on Lexington Avenue near Catalpa Drive just to personally tell us that her mom had just passed away that morning.

Mrs. Schuman was the glue that held the family together, and some were concerned for Adele’s wellbeing. Her wonderful older brother took Adele under his wing and they both relocated to Wisconsin (I believe). Adele did so well. Just after receiving a job promotion and buying her first home with her own money in 1977, a drunk driver broad-sided her small automobile. She died immediately.

I still have fond memories of the sweet, loving girl she always was. Her father buried Adele at Riverview Cemetery on East Shantz Avenue in Oakwood next to her mother. I miss Adele even today.
